I had a dream to help others years ago. I knew that if I could get a positive message out I would change the world. I followed my mentors. I watched what they did and went after it. I thought it would be pretty easy to put a positive message out to the world.
I wrote a book, bought business cards, a new suit, even got a hair cut. I went out on a mission to change the world. For the first few months my excitement carried me, but as the bank account dwindled and my faith in the human experience dissipated. I started to think that maybe my voice was not to be heard.
My roommate back in the day had warned me with love. He said, “you got a great job, why would you leave your career to help people, you haven’t done anything and no one will listen to you.” I can hear those words like yesterday they are burnt into my brain.
Everything that I was doing was confirming exactly what he said. No-one was listening to me. No-one was buying my coaching, my books, or anything. I wanted to give up, and truth be told a did a lot. But, something keep driving me to stick with it. I think it was my ego, not willing to admit failure and also trying to save face with all those who I had told.
I gave it my best and it wasn’t until my fifth or sixth year that things started to happen. Why am I telling you this? Well, I want to see the world change. It is getting ugly out there. The separation, the hatred, the noise. Love is losing. The givers are being taken advantage of, and we are starting to lose.
It is time to win. In order to win, you have to understand that it takes time to create true influence. Posting a few words on social media is not going to make a difference. What will make a difference is if you get a true voice and start to put your message of love and energy out there.
Most of use don’t have the tenacity to stick with it. I get it. We want it to work as we planned. I was exactly the same. The truth is that there are going to be bumps in the road. In April I decided to do an experiment for my Inner Circle (my personal mastermind group). I wanted to build an influence channel and get thousands of people together to hear my message.
I have over 250,000 people on various social media accounts over the last 10 years, and have built influence. But, this project I wanted to keep in private from all of those people.
Since April I have done 12 videos, and 12 blog posts. I created a newsletter called “Motivational Monday’s” and put it on my blog (I get decent traffic). I started to execute what I call the viral loop (a technique that will create viral views over time.) I will be teaching it at the Lifestyle Design Summit in October this year.
This is the important part. As of today, here are the metrics.
Youtube total subscribers: 129
Total video views: 2442
My last video had 25 views. I average around 100 views a video.
My total sign ups for Motivational Mondays: 141
In 4 months I have around 120 real contacts that I can build and influence. Not very good. If I needed this for revenue, I would be in trouble. How can 120 people help me spread my message. This is when most people give up. Especially us in the personal development and healing, or motivational space.
Why am I doing this? As a real example of the time it takes to build something that will great freedom and influence for you. This will hopefully keep you focused on sticking with it, even when the numbers are not there. When I speak I tell the story of the “Last Supper” from a non-religious point of view. If you look at Christianity and the message that was spread around the world. It started with one person and 13 people. One who was a traitor! I get it that one person who was very special, but think about it Jesus started with 13. I already have 120, not bad when you look at it that way.
My first book Get Out of Neutral: Manifest the Life Experience You Desire sold horrible. When it first came out I begged people to buy it. So much so in my last book Sacred 6 I called a failure. But here is the thing. Since the Sacred 6 came out in May I have gotten hundreds of e-mails from people who said that book had changed their lives. I wouldn’t have never known that. I saw it as a failure because I didn’t hit sales numbers, but all the time it was doing what it was supposed to, and I didn’t have the patience to let it build. That book as now sold thousands of copies.
You can do this. The key to having a voice and influence is to focus on making sure you cover your nut balance (the amount of expenses you have to pay each month) and give yourself enough time to make this work. You have to focus on a clear and consistent message that will over time grow into a tribe.
I am tired of the takers winning, and I am going to keep putting resources out to help us take back this world. So this is what you need to do:
1. Stay patient. Recognize that this process takes time. You will have ups and downs, but stay focused on your mission.
2. Be consistent and clear in your message. What are you about? What is your USP? (Unique Selling Proposition). What is your niche? What are you an expert in?
3. Always be adding value, but watch giving too much stuff out for free. You can’t build a business on takers, you have to work with givers. Free content is a great starter, but you can’t give it all away for free.
4. Learn marketing. I know this one is tough, and there is so much garbage out there. Buy, you have to have a few tactics and ideas that you are going to do. Spend some time in courses, and follow those that are doing what you want to do. I will be launching Intelligent Life Design again this year which will help.
5. Get around others who “get it”. Who you surround yourself is who you become.
6. This is most important: Personal development. The truth is when I started my business I wasn’t ready. I needed to grow. It was all about my personal development and that is what has taken me to the next level. People ask me all the time for the secret and I tell them go listen to MorningCoach.com daily, and they say no I want the secret. That is the secret, work on yourself daily.
We need you out there putting great energy into the world. You can follow the things that I do and watch as I put my message out there. My message is about helping people find more peace, love, happiness and joy. I do this through my websites, radio show, books, speaking events, and courses. It has taken me 10 years to build massive influence. You can do it too, just stick with it. I would love to hear from you. What is your message? What is your gift to the world? What are you doing to make lasting change and leave your legacy?
Shoot me a note, lots of love,
