5 Tips to Setting New Year's Resolution for Your Business

The new year is upon us again and in many boardrooms and offices people are discussing hitting the gym, eating better, and attaining personal goals. How about the business? Can one set New Year’s resolutions for the business too?

As employees start to shut off mentally for the holidays, this is an amazing time to get your team together and focus on the plan for next year. Instead of the normal quarterly planning, get your team together and set some New Year’s resolutions for the business this year.

Here are some tips on setting New Year’s resolutions for your business. Make sure that as you set these they are not based on the final month of the year, but based on the last year. When planning for the next year many businesses get stuck in month-to-month management. Let this exercise free you from that.

1. What is the focus?

The first thing in the brainstorming session is to determine what is going to be the focus of the resolutions. Make this session only green-light thinking and have some fun getting some great resolutions out there.  As you write them all up on the board move to red-light thinking and get the resolutions down to a maximum of six things.

If you are doing this by department then list only six things per department. You can break them down further depending on the size of the organization.

2. What is the plan?

Once you have the resolutions on the board, it is time to focus on the plan. Start to outline the attack on each resolution. Make sure there is a significant “why” behind each one and elect an owner or team of owners for the resolution. The owner will manage the plan for attainment.

The main focus needs to be why the organization is going after the resolution. “Buy in” is critical, and the owner needs to assure that everyone is ready to work the plan.

3. What are the metrics for measurement?

Establish clear and measurable metrics for each resolution. I would set them on a monthly reporting schedule so that the owner can make sure that the resolution is coming to fruition.

Measurement is critical in attaining the New Year’s resolution, so do not disregard this step.

4. Is there “Buy In”?

Now that we have everything in place to move forward we must check for “buy in” once again. “Buy in” means that the entire team or organization is in on making this resolution happen. You don’t have to have total agreement, but you must avoid apathy toward the attainment. It is all about maintaining a positive attitude toward the resolution.

This is one of the main reasons I started MorningCoach.com. I found that in business, many team members’ attitudes fluctuated, and as a result they could not achieve their potential. By providing a system of positive thinking every morning the entire organization changed as attitudes changed.

“Buy in” is critical not only in the attainment of New Year’s resolutions, but also in anything the organization is moving after.

5. Rewards

Once we have all the above requirements in place, it is now time to talk about the incentive to push it through. With “buy in” established, this is an added carrot that will allow people to push toward the resolution.

Make sure the rewards are fun and work for the entire team. It can be anything from monetary rewards to a pizza party. Make sure you attach rewards not only to completion but also to steps along the way.

This exercise will help in achieving New Year’s resolutions and goals for your business and will help you in management of new projects throughout the year. It is a powerful process to get the entire team focused with the right attitude toward objectives.

These tips will do just that and will help you have the best year ever!
